Report | Workington Town 36 Doncaster RLFC 12

It was heartbreak for the Dons as they suffered a 36-12 defeat at the hands of Workington Town at Derwent Park in the Betfred League One Promotion Final.

The Dons suffered an early setback as Joe Brown crashed over the line after only one minute on Workington’s first attack following a break from stand-off Jamie Doran. Carl Forber converted the try to make it 6-0.  

Workington were then reduced to 12 men on the sixth minute as Declan O’Donnell was then sin binned for a late shot on Matty Beharrell.  

The Dons were beginning to settle into the game now and their pressure paid off as Liam Johnson was put through a gap following a great pass from Jake Sweeting. Beharrell converted to level the scores.  

It was end-to-end at this point with the deadlock broken on the 15th minute as Connor Fitzsimmons went over for the home side. Carl Forber again converting. 

Workington continued to put the Dons line under pressure and it paid off in the 33rd minute as Fitzsimmons put Forber over under the posts to stretch the lead. Forber keeping up his 100% kicking record in the first half to stretch the lead to 18-6.  

Just as it looked like the Dons were going into the changing rooms 12 points down, when a fantastic cut-out pass put winger Ollie Greensmith over on the touchline to close the gap.

Dons started second half brightly putting the Workington line under early pressure.  

However, it was the home team who opening the scoring in the 50th minute with Matty Henson following up his own kick to touch down. Forber converting off the post to make the score 24-12.  

The Dons were the better team for much of the second half but their pressure failed to turn into points.  

However, it was Workington who confirmed their place in the Championship with a try in the 72nd minute with Marcus O’Brien going over in the 72nd minute.   

Brad Holroyd further adding to the score with five minutes to go to make the scoreline 34-12.  Forber converting to make it 36-12.  

The scoreline ultimately proved a step too far for the brave Dons side.
