Introducing the Dons' Girls Futures rugby programme

We are pleased to launch our new Girls Future rugby programmes as we seek to grow the female game across the city.

An offshoot of our successful Future Dons scheme, Girls Future will offer sessions run by Dons staff and players, designed to develop the skills required in rugby league.

The first sessions will take place during half term on February 19 on the 3G pitches at the Eco-Power Stadium.

A session for 12-to-14-year-olds will run from 10-11.30am followed by a session for 15-to-16-year-olds between 1-2.30pm.

Dons head of development Andy Castle said: “We’re looking to mirror what we do with boys through the Future Dons programme.

“We’ll be offering development sessions initially and then we’ll take it from there. If we can get a girls team playing, that would be great and that would be the ultimate goal.

“At the moment, we’re offering these sessions. There is a lot of untapped talent in the girls game in the area and it’s great to see.

“Myself, Isaac Misky and one of our community coaches have been going into schools and we’re working with a lot of girls. We’ve had young girls in primary schools who have never seen a rugby ball before pick one up and they’re a natural. There’s plenty of natural players that haven’t been given an opportunity to play.

“Hopefully we can tap into a lot of the talent that out there here at the Dons.”
