Aston named Dons captain for 2026 campaign

We are delighted to confirm that Cory Aston has been named Dons captain ahead of the 2026 season.

The 30-year-old was selected by head coach Richard Horne to lead the side this term, starting with Sunday’s season-opener against Halifax Panthers.

Stand off Aston joined the Dons in October following his departure from Sheffield Eagles. He has more than 200 senior appearances and 70 tries to his name.

“It’s a massive honour and that’s the first thing I said to Rich,” Aston said. “To consider me, as a new player coming into the group, is quite a privilege.

“There’s a lot of responsibility with it but it’s something I’m really looking forward to.

“I’m just going to take it as it comes and be myself. I’m going to be honest, which is important, and lead by my actions.

“In the position I play, you’ve got to talk a lot and be a leader out there. I’ll feel my way into it and learn a few lessons along the way, which will be important.”

Aston marked his first appearance in Dons colours with a try in the friendly against Bradford Bulls last weekend.

He will be assisted in his new role by vice captains Greg Burns and Brad Knowles.

Head coach Horne said: “Cory is one of those players who is always a leader in whatever he does.

“He’s come into the group and fitted in really well with the boys. He works hard every day and sets an example. He’s just got that leadership quality.

“He’s a vocal presence so it won’t change the way he is out on the pitch and I know he’ll do a great job.”
