NEWS | Matt James signs for the Dons

The Dons are delighted to announce the signing of experienced forward Matt James on a one-year deal.

The 35-year-old arrives having played for the likes of Bradford Bulls, Barrow Raiders and Featherstone Rovers, prior to signing for Sheffield Eagles in 2016.

James spent five seasons as captain of the Eagles, and has racked up more than 260 career appearances, as well as earning international recognition with Wales.

He represents an important addition to the pack for 2023, and will see James link up with close friend Greg Burns once again.

On joining the Dons, James said: “Having played at the Eco-Power Stadium quite a lot while I was at Sheffield I was always really impressed with the facilities and it is familiar surroundings for me.

“Greg is one of my best mates and he has told me how much he enjoyed it last year, as well as explaining how good a place it is to play rugby.

“The team got to the final last year and were unlucky not to go up, and they’ve got aspirations of winning the competition this season.

“I want to come and help the team get over the finish line this time. When I finished at Sheffield it was because mentally more than physically I was a bit drained whereas I’ve got that enthusiasm back again now.

“I’m not coming to go through the motions or make the numbers up, I want to get the best out of myself and the other lads in the dressing room.”

Head coach Richard Horne said: "Matt is a very experienced middle, who captained Sheffield Eagles for a number of years in the Championship.

"I'm sure his leadership will help especially in the big games that we will have throughout the season."
