NEWS | Workington Town (A) match preview

The Dons travel to take on Workington Town in the Coral Challenge Cup fourth round this weekend.

Richard Horne’s side sealed their progression with a 24-20 win over Thornhill Trojans earlier this month.

Town also had to come through a stern test from an amateur side as they ran out 28-22 winners against West Bowling.

Who’s the gaffer?

Former Huddersfield Giants assistant Chris Thorman was named as Workington head coach midway through last season. His work in helping town reach the play-offs saw him handed a three year deal ahead of 2020.

Ones to watch

Jamie Doran

The 25-year-old half-back was born in Whitehaven and signed for Betfred Super League side Wigan Warriors as a teenager. After joining Town on loan in 2015, Doran quickly made the move permanent and has been a key figure at Derwent Park ever since.

His quality is often on show and he was rewarded with a new three-year deal midway through the 2018 campaign. He won the club’s 2019 Try of the Year award for an effort against London Skolars.

Stevie Scholey

After coming through the ranks at the Cumbrian side in 2015, Scholey has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for the club over the past five seasons. The prop forward has been a consistent performer in recent seasons and has signed a deal which will keep him at Derwent Park until the end of the 2021 season.

Fuifui Moimoi

Now 40 years of age, Moimoi signed a new deal with Workington for the 2020 campaign after impressing over the past couple of seasons. The New Zealand international started his career in the NRL with Parramatta Eels, where he spent 11 years before joining Leigh Centurions. He had a stint with Toronto Wolfpack and helped them get promoted out of Betfred League One before arriving at Derwent Park.

Last time out

The Dons ran out comfortable 30-4 winners at Derwent Park in the final game of the regular season in 2019. Two tries from Tom Halliday, along with scores from Jason Tali, Matty Beharrell and Frankie Mariano put Richard Horne’s side in control, before Caine Barnes grabbed a consolation for the home side.
