Richard Horne says his team’s defensive performance won them the play-off tie at Newcastle Thunder.

The Dons won 20-6 at Kingston Park, and kept the home side scoreless until the latter stages of the game.

He said: “It was a great team performance, the boys worked hard for each other and even if we made an error we made up for it very quickly.

“At the moment we are basing our game on how good our defence is, we’re scoring points off the back of that.

“We had to make sure we managed the ruck tempo because if we didn’t they would have been hard to stop with so many quick players in their team.”

With a trip to Oldham next up at the semi-final stage, Horne is ready for a big week leading up to the game.

He added: “This is a huge week coming up for us, we will see where we’re at with bodies available but we will prepare exactly the same.

“We will work hard in training and look to implement a game-plan which gives us the best chance of going to Oldham and getting the result.”
