The Keepmoat Stadium

Betfred League One

A disappointing day the Keepmoat Stadium for the Dons saw them go down 35-16 to a hard working Hunslet side.

The Dons took the lead after a brilliant piece of play from Sam Doherty on the right wing, a high kick into the air from Jordan Howden was perfectly weighted for the on-rushing Doherty to collect and touch down.

The visitors tried to respond straight away after that early set-back but could not find a way past the resolute Dons defence, after receiving some treatment Frankie Mariano intercepted a pass across the line and set off in pursuit of the Hunslet try line.

He was eventually taken down by the retreating James Watson, but was sent to the sin-bin for holding Mariano down for too long.

It was Hunslet who would register the next try of the game just before the 20th minute mark, a sweeping move from left to right saw Cain Southernwood force his way through the Dons’ defensive line before diving over to bring the scores level, before Joseph Sanderson added the extra two.

The home side then took the advantage once again, a powerful piece of play from Ross Osborne saw him force his way through the visitors defensive line and touched the ball down.

Just over the half-an-hour mark and Hunslet were back on level terms, a break from Jack Coventry saw him ease himself through the covering Dons defence before off-loading to Jack Walton who had the easy job of scoring the try.

Hunslet were awarded a penalty on the hooter, which Sanderson converted to extend the visitors lead to four at the end of the first period.

The hosts were straight out of the blocks after the break and within four minutes of the restart they had themselves another try.

Some strong play from Connor Scott, who was making his 50th appearance for the Dons, off-loaded to Kyle Kesik who got over the line right in-front of the posts.

Hunslet came back at the Dons and were on the score sheet again on the 53rd minute, a loose piece of handling from Jason Tali gifted the ball to Nathan Chappell who carried the ball 30 meters to score in the right corner.

Gary Thornton’s men were awarded another penalty on the hour mark from around the 40-meter mark, the right boot of Sanderson made no mistake to add the extra two points.

An instinctive break-away by duo Lee and Sanderson saw the former off-load to the latter who sprinted straight through the Dons defence before touching down under the posts.

As the game reached the final 10 minutes of the affair, Hunslet added another point to the score-line this time a drop-goal from Southernwood would inflict more pain on Richard Horne’s side.

The visitors were in again with five minutes left on the clock, a well-worked move eventually saw the ball end in the hands of Duane Straugheir who forced his way over the Dons line.
