Keepmoat Stadium

Challenge Cup fourth round

The Dons progressed to the fifth round of the Challenge Cup with a 34-0 win over Newcastle Thunder at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Four second half tries, added to scores from Richard Owen and Liam Harris in the opening 40 were enough to secure the win, and extend the Dons' unbeaten start to the 2018 campaign.

Richard Horne made three changes to his starting XIII, as Liam Welham, Russ Spiers and Brad England came into the side to replace Jason Tali, Ryan Boyle and Jack Downs.

The Dons had the lead after just six minutes, full-back Owen side-stepped the Newcastle defence and created space for himself to go over for his first try for the club. Harris converted for 6-0.

The home side extended their lead midway through the first-half, as Harris worked his magic close to the line and squeezed through a gap in the Thunder defence to score. He converted his own try to extend the lead to 12-0.

There were threatening attacks at either end of the pitch for large parts of the first half, but handling errors cost Newcastle in-particular as they looked to get back into the game.

The Dons handled the conditions better for the majority of the game, and got their third try of the game within seven minutes of the restart, Harris found Sanderson on the wing and he went over for his third in the past two games.

They had another try as the game ticked over the hour mark, it was another move down the left as Owen's kick through was pounced upon by Liam Welham who went over for his first try of the season. Harris converted for 22-0.

The Dons were in again soon after a high kick wasnt dealt with by Tyler Craig, and Aaron Jones-Bishop was on hand to collect and race over for the try. Harris added the two. 28-0.

Sam Doherty then got in on the act with 12 minutes remaining, a brilliant passage of play eventually saw the ball worked out to the wing and he squeezed over in the corner. Harris was successful with the touchline conversion. 34-0.
