The Dons progressed into the last 16 of the Coral Challenge Cup with a 16-12 victory over Batley Bulldogs at the Keepmoat Stadium.

New signing Menzie Yere made his first appearance for the club after joining on a month’s loan from Sheffield Eagles.

In a tight opening quarter of the game, Sam Doherty came closest for the home side as he looked to stretch over before being forced into touch by the Batley defence.

It took until the 36th minute for the game’s first try, and it came when Connor Bower rose highest to claim Jordie Hedges’ kick and put Richard Horne’s side in front at the break.

Batley responded seven minutes after half-time, as prop forward Michael Ward went through a gap to score under the posts.

They were over again five minutes later, as winger Wayne Reittie received the ball close to the line and had the strength to force the ball down. Dave Scott’s conversion put Matt Diskin’s side 12-6 in front.

The game turned once more when Bulldogs’ forward Joe Taira was sent to the sin-bin for a late challenge on Kyle Kesik.

The Dons took full advantage two minutes later when Yere was too powerful for the Batley defence, eventually twisting his way over to score.

The winning try came 16 minutes from time, as Jason Tali went close to the line before supplying the pass for Doherty to squeeze over in the corner.
