Betfred League One

Bootham Crescent

The Dons put up a battling display but were ultimately beaten 31-16 by York at Bootham Crescent.

Richard Horne made three changes to his XIII, as Sam Doherty, Matty Beharrell and Jordan Lane came into the starting line-up.

Both sides were reduced to 12 men within the opening five minutes, as Russ Spiers and York’s Josh Johnson were given their marching orders after a coming together.

The Dons responded emphatically and had the opening try of the game when a brilliant cut-out pass from Beharrell set Richard Owen free to score in the corner.

The home side hit back four minutes later, as winger Judah Mazive collected a ball on the left and just about squeezed over in the corner. Connor Robinson converted to put York in front at 6-4.

Richard Horne’s side pulled level when they chose to go for goal from a penalty just 10 metres out, and Jack Sanderson converted to make it 6-6.

York were to go in at the break with a slender lead, as a converted Robinson penalty was added to when Ben Cockayne skipped across the line and fired a pass to Ash Robson who made no mistake with his finish in the corner.

With points hard to come by in the early stages of the second half, Robinson added a drop-goal to extend York’s lead to two scores.

The Dons scored their second try as the game approached the hour-mark, when Jason Tali was able to get a clever offload away to Owen who went over to complete a double.

York continued to keep the Dons at arms-length though and scored another try just three minutes later, as Hull KR man Matty Marsh twisted through a gap to score. Robinson converted to make the score 19-10 with 17 minutes left.

A busy few minutes saw the Dons score another try and it was a piece of brilliance from Beharrell on debut, as he saw his reversed kick through pounced upon by Jordan Howden who raced through to score. Sanderson converted for 19-16.

The home side sealed the win with two tries in the final few minutes, as Graeme Horne spotted a gap to crash over, before Cockayne scored an individual effort to add more gloss to the score-line.
